How DSC pricing works

A DSC is issued by a Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) licensed CA such as eMudhra, Sify, Capricorn, Pantasign or VSign. Since Jan 2021 only Class 3 is valid (Class 1 and 2 were merged into Class 3). Cost includes the certificate, the FIPS-140-2 USB token (mandatory) and the issuance KYC. Renewal on the same token is cheaper because no new token is needed.

Worked example

A proprietor filing GSTR-3B monthly typically buys a 2-year individual Class 3 sign-only DSC for around ₹900–1,500 (including USB token, around ₹500). A private limited company director filing AOC-4 and DIR-3 KYC on MCA21 needs a Class 3 sign + encrypt combo, around ₹2,000–3,000 for 2 years. For e-tender bidding on GeM or CPP portal, sign + encrypt is mandatory; that runs around ₹2,500–4,000 for 2 years.

When to use this

  • GST monthly filing (mandatory for companies and LLPs above ₹5 Cr turnover)
  • Income tax e-verification beyond simple ITR-1 (audit cases, ITR-7 trusts)
  • MCA21 filings — AOC-4, MGT-7, DIR-3 KYC, SPICe+
  • e-tendering on GeM, CPP, IRCTC vendor portal, state PWD portals
  • EPFO employer portal, IEC code application on DGFT

FAQ

DSC for personal use only — needed?

Mandatory for: filing IT returns above turnover threshold, GST, MCA, large court filings. Optional for individuals filing simple ITRs (Aadhaar OTP works).

Can DSC be transferred?

No — tied to your PAN + identity. New job / company = new DSC required.

PFX file vs USB token?

PFX (software) is portable, easier; USB token (hardware) is more secure (key never leaves token). Most professionals prefer USB token; small businesses use PFX for affordability.
