What a good experience letter contains
Indian background verification (BGV) firms — First Advantage, AuthBridge, OnGrid, IDfy — check four anchor facts: legal name as on PAN/Aadhaar, exact joining and last working dates, last designation, and whether the employee was relieved in good standing. A formal experience letter on the company letterhead, signed by an HR / authorised signatory, with date, address and either a stamp or digital signature, clears 90% of those checks.
Worked example
A software engineer who joined a Hyderabad startup on 1 Jul 2022 and resigned 31 May 2025 should get a single “experience cum relieving letter” covering 2 years 11 months, last designation “Senior Software Engineer”, last CTC ₹28 lakh (optional — many companies omit CTC; some MNCs insist on it). Add a line such as “She was relieved on 31 May 2025 after due notice period.” The new employer's BGV calls HR or emails the address on the letterhead to confirm.

FAQ
When should an employer issue this letter?
Within 2 weeks of last working day. It's not legally mandatory in India, but standard practice. New employer often won't join you without a relieving letter from previous employer.
What if my employer refuses to issue?
Send a written request via email + registered post. If still no response, you can: (a) get a peer / manager to write a recommendation, (b) provide salary slips + offer/appointment letter as proof, (c) escalate to labour court for very serious cases.
Is the experience letter date the joining or last working day?
It states both. The letter is *issued* on a date close to last working day. The employment period is from joining to last working day, both clearly mentioned.
