FAQ

Can I drive with an expired DL?

No. Driving with expired DL = ₹5,000 fine (section 177 MV Act, post-2019). Higher penalties for repeat offences. Insurance claim may also be denied.

Online or RTO renewal?

Online via Parivahan + scheduled RTO visit for biometric. Smart card delivery: 15-30 days. Some states allow fully online (no visit needed).

International DL needed?

For driving abroad, yes — IDP (International Driving Permit) issued by RTO, valid 1 year. Apply with Form 4A and existing DL.
