How it works
Birth registration in India is governed by the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 (amended 2023). Hospitals report births to the local registrar in 21 days; you collect a free certificate from the municipal corporation or panchayat. The Centre's Civil Registration System (crsorgi.gov.in) is the unified online portal, but most metros — Delhi MCD, BMC Mumbai, BBMP Bangalore, GHMC Hyderabad, KMC Kolkata — also accept applications on their own sites with the same legal weight.
Worked example
A child born at Apollo Hospital, Bangalore on 10 April 2026: the hospital files the birth notification to BBMP within a week. The parent logs into the BBMP citizen portal, pays ~₹35-50, and downloads a digitally-signed PDF within 7-15 days. If you miss the 21-day window, late registration after 30 days needs a magistrate's order and an affidavit (₹500-2,000 in fees); after a year, additional newspaper ad and notice period apply. From 1 Oct 2023 onwards, the digital birth certificate is the single document for Aadhaar enrolment, school admission, passport and driving licence applications.
When to use this
- First-time application within 21 days of birth at a hospital or home delivery
- Late registration for adults born before 1990 in rural areas with no record
- Corrections in name spelling, parent name or date of birth after issuance
Once issued, you'll likely need our Aadhaar update tracker for the child's biometric enrolment.
