Birthstone Finder
Western tradition assigns a stone by birth month; Vedic astrology by Rashi (lunar). Both have rich symbolic meaning.
How it works
Two parallel systems are used in India. The modern Western list (standardised by Jewelers of America in 1912 and updated by AGS) assigns one or two stones to each calendar month — Garnet for January, Amethyst for February, etc. The Vedic system maps stones to the nine planets (Navaratna) and through them to your Moon-sign Rashi, which a jyotish derives from your janma kundli — Ruby for Sun/Leo, Pearl for Moon/Cancer, Red Coral for Mars/Aries-Scorpio, Yellow Sapphire for Jupiter/Sagittarius-Pisces, and so on.
Worked example
A Mumbai bride born 14 November under Vrishchika Rashi (Scorpio): Western birthstone is Topaz/Citrine; Vedic primary is Red Coral (Moonga) for Mars, often set in copper or gold rings of 4-7 carats. Cost varies widely — a certified Italian Moonga from Jaipur runs ₹3,000-15,000 per carat, while a comparable yellow sapphire (Pukhraj for Jupiter) starts at ₹10,000 per carat for natural Ceylonese stones. Always insist on a govt-recognised lab certificate (GIA, IGI, or GTL) before purchase.
When to use this
- Choosing an engagement or wedding gift aligned with the recipient's Rashi
- Before buying a Navaratna piece at Tanishq, Malabar Gold, or Kalyan Jewellers
- Decoding a jyotish's gemstone recommendation (Upratna substitutes are far cheaper)

FAQ
Wear or not wear?
Western birthstones — fashion, no astrological mandate. Vedic ratnas — recommended only after a horoscope analysis. Wrong gem can theoretically harm; consult an astrologer before wearing.
Real gem vs synthetic?
For Vedic ratnas, natural / unheated stones are preferred. Synthetic / heat-treated stones are said to lack astrological efficacy. For fashion, both work.
Which finger / metal?
Specific to each ratna. Yellow Sapphire — gold ring, index finger of right hand, on Thursday morning. Each has its own panchang-aligned protocol.
