How the schedule is set

Article 83(2) fixes the Lok Sabha's tenure at 5 years and Article 172(1) does the same for state assemblies. The Election Commission of India (ECI) must hold elections so that the new house is constituted before the old one's term ends. Dates are announced ~6 weeks before voting; the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) kicks in the moment the schedule is announced and stays till results day.

Worked example

The 17th Lok Sabha's term ran from 17 Jun 2019 to 16 Jun 2024. The ECI announced the 2024 general election on 16 Mar 2024, voting in 7 phases from 19 Apr to 1 Jun, counting on 4 Jun — the 18th Lok Sabha was constituted on 24 Jun 2024. State examples: Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha 288 seats, single phase 20 Nov 2024, counting 23 Nov. Bihar 243 seats typically goes in 3–4 phases due to security concerns.

When to use this

  • Planning travel or weddings around polling-day dry days in your state
  • Tracking when MCC will end so government announcements / transfers can resume
  • Voter slip and polling-booth check — pair with the ECI's electoralsearch.in
  • Coverage planning for journalists and analysts

FAQ

How long is the model code of conduct?

From announcement to result declaration — typically 6-8 weeks for state, 6-9 weeks for general. Govt cannot make new policy announcements during this window.

Can I vote in a state I'm visiting?

No — voting is constituency-bound. Your name must be on the electoral roll of the polling station. Apply for transfer (Form 8) if relocated.

What is NOTA?

None Of The Above — option since 2013. If you don't support any candidate, click NOTA. Symbolic — doesn't affect outcome but registers voter dissatisfaction.
