GATE Rank Predictor
Approximate AIR from GATE normalised score. CSE/ECE/EE are most competitive; rank distributions are tighter. Mechanical, civil, etc. have wider spreads at similar scores.
Top 1000 typically gets IIT M.Tech direct admission. PSU shortlisting cutoffs vary — IOCL CSE: ~250, NTPC EE: ~150 (general).
How the prediction works
GATE scores are normalised across sessions to a 0–1000 scale with mean 350 and SD 100 for the qualifying candidates. We map your normalised score to historic rank distributions for each branch from the last 3 GATE cycles. CSE/DA, ECE and EE attract the largest paper-wise candidate pools (50,000–80,000+), so AIR-to-score curves are tighter at the top. Mechanical, Civil and Chemical have wider score spreads at similar ranks.
Worked example
A CSE candidate scoring 62/100 raw → ~700 normalised → AIR ~1500. That clears IIT M.Tech written cutoffs at Delhi/Bombay/Madras for most CSE specialisations and qualifies for PSU shortlists (BHEL, NTPC, IOCL). A Mechanical 55/100 raw → ~AIR 800 → opens IIT M.Tech and PSU interviews. The same 700 normalised score in a low-volume paper like Architecture might land you AIR 50.
When to use this
- After the GATE answer key release — estimate rank before the official score card
- Deciding which IITs and IISc to apply to (M.Tech, MS Research, direct PhD)
- PSU recruitment shortlisting via GATE score — different cutoffs per company
- Choosing between a job offer and a fresh attempt next year
GATE is also valid for assistant-professor recruitment and CSIR-DST fellowships. Predictions are statistical estimates — actual AIR depends on the year's overall paper difficulty.
FAQ
Is GATE rank or GATE score more important?
For PSU recruitment: rank. For M.Tech admission via COAP / CCMT: score. The two correlate strongly but not 1:1.
How long is the GATE score valid?
3 years from result. Useful for re-applying to PSUs / M.Tech in subsequent years without re-attempting. PSU recruitment usually looks at the latest GATE score.
Can I get IIT M.Tech with GATE 700?
Direct admission via COAP — usually yes for non-CSE branches. CSE at top 7 IITs needs ~800+ for general category.
