How muhurat dates are chosen

A vivah muhurat aligns three factors: an auspicious tithi (typically Dwitiya, Tritiya, Panchami, Saptami, Ekadashi or Trayodashi), a favourable nakshatra (Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Moola, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada, Revati), and a stable lagna (rising sign). Chaturmas — roughly Devshayani Ekadashi to Devuthana Ekadashi (mid-July to early November 2026) — has no wedding muhurats as Vishnu is in symbolic rest.

Worked example

A couple targeting a Mumbai wedding in early 2026 would find peak dates in late January, all of February, and the first half of March before Holashtak. Mid-April brings a short window before Tara-Asta (Venus combust). The next big season opens late November after Devuthana Ekadashi and runs through December. For a Bengaluru destination wedding, May offers strong dates before the south-west monsoon hits Kerala on 1 June.

When to use this

  • Picking the engagement-to-wedding window after roka or sagai
  • Booking destination venues 8–12 months ahead in Udaipur, Jaipur or Goa
  • Sequencing other ceremonies (haldi, mehndi, sangeet) around the lagna
  • Avoiding Chaturmas, Pitru Paksha and inauspicious tithis when shortlisting dates

FAQ

What if my preferred date isn't in the muhurat list?

You can still get married — many couples do. Muhurats are recommended, not mandatory. Some pandits offer additional / less auspicious muhurats outside the strict list.

Why are some months blocked?

No-muhurat months: Adhik Maas (intercalary, every 3 years), Chaturmas (Jul-Oct), and certain weeks around Kharmas (Dec 14 – Jan 14). Vary by panchang.

Is muhurat relevant for court / civil weddings?

Less so — civil registration under Special Marriage Act has its own timing rules (30-day notice). Muhurat applies more to the religious ceremony / saat-phere.
