Travel Insurance Cost

Schengen and US visas mandate travel insurance. Premium varies by destination, age, duration and cover. USA / Canada are 1.5-2× the price of Asia / Europe.

10 days
35 yrs
$100,000
Estimated premium
₹900
~ ₹90/day

Includes medical, trip cancellation, baggage loss. USA / Schengen mandate insurance.

How premium is built

Insurers price travel cover on four levers: destination zone (USA/Canada most expensive, Asia cheapest), trip length in days, traveller age (steep jump after 60), and sum insured (typically USD 50K, 100K, 250K or 500K for medical). Schengen visa rules mandate a minimum 30,000 EUR cover, which roughly maps to a USD 50K plan.

Worked example

A 35-year-old flying Delhi → Paris for 10 days on a Schengen visa with USD 100K cover typically pays ₹900–1,400 across Tata AIG, ICICI Lombard and Bajaj Allianz. The same traveller doing a 14-day USA trip with USD 250K cover would pay ₹2,800–4,200. A 65-year-old on the same USA trip can pay ₹9,000+ — age is the single biggest factor after destination.

When to use this

  • Schengen, UK, USA, Canada or Australia visa applications
  • Comparing single-trip vs multi-trip annual plans for frequent flyers
  • Sending parents abroad — senior-citizen premiums need a separate quote
  • Student plans for 6–12 month overseas study (different category)
