Aadhaar Masker
Upload a PDF and we'll auto-detect every Aadhaar number on it and mask the first 8 digits with black rectangles. Useful when sharing KYC documents, rental agreements or applications with offices, banks or recruiters who shouldn't see your full Aadhaar.
๐ Your PDF never leaves the browser. All processing happens locally on your device.
Why mask your Aadhaar?
UIDAI itself recommends sharing a masked Aadhaar (only the last 4 digits visible) for any non-mandatory verification. The full 12-digit number plus your photo can be used to commit identity fraud โ open SIM cards, bank accounts, even loans. The masked Aadhaar reveals only the last 4 digits, which is enough to identify the document but not enough to clone your identity.
How this tool works
- Text-based PDFs: we extract the text layer, find 12-digit numbers matching the Aadhaar format, validate them with the Verhoeff checksum to filter out random IDs, and overlay black rectangles on the first 8 digits.
- Scanned PDFs (image-only): the auto-detect won't find text positions. The tool falls back to letting you draw rectangles manually over the Aadhaar area on each page.
- The output is a new PDF with the masking baked in โ not just a visual overlay. Even if the recipient tries to copy the text, they get the masked version.
When NOT to mask
- Banks and govt agencies that legally require the full Aadhaar (Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act). Examples: PAN-Aadhaar linking, EPFO, IT department.
- Aadhaar enabled payment system (AEPS) transactions.
- e-KYC for SIM cards, demat accounts, mutual funds.
For everything else โ landlord ID proof, hostel admission, hotel check-in, courier delivery, school enrolment โ the masked Aadhaar is sufficient and safer.
