How it works

The tool strips spaces, dashes, brackets, and the common prefix variants (+91, 91-, 0, 00 91) from each number, then checks the 10-digit body. As per TRAI's National Numbering Plan 2003 (with allocations expanded in 2014 and 2024), Indian mobile numbers must start with 6, 7, 8 or 9. Landlines and short codes have separate ranges and are flagged invalid for mobile workflows.

Worked example

Pasting +91 (98) 765-43210, 09876543210, and 918765432109 returns the clean 10-digit numbers 9876543210, 9876543210 and 8765432109 respectively, plus their E.164 form +919876543210 for WhatsApp Business API, Razorpay, Zoho, and SMS gateway uploads. A number starting with 5 (e.g. 5012345678) is rejected because the 5-series is reserved for M2M and was not in the mobile pool as of FY 2025-26.

FAQ

Indian phone number format?

10 digits starting with 6, 7, 8, or 9 (post-2003). Some legacy 9-digit numbers in non-metros. Country code is +91. Includes mobile and landline.

Can I have multiple numbers per Aadhaar?

No — DoT mandates max 9 mobile connections per Aadhaar. Surrender old numbers via TAFCOP portal if you don't use them. Otherwise telcos may refuse new SIMs.

Why mobile portability is good?
