How the moonrise time is computed

Moonrise on Karva Chauth varies across India because the Earth rotates underneath the rising lunar disc — a moon rising over Mumbai becomes visible at Delhi about 8–12 minutes later, and at Kolkata roughly 50 minutes earlier. We use the astronomical moonrise time (when the upper limb crosses the local horizon) for each city, accounting for latitude, longitude and the Moon's declination on the festival night. Tropospheric refraction and the eastern horizon's actual elevation can shift sighting by 2–5 minutes.

Sample times across cities (2026 reference)

  • Kolkata / Patna — earliest moonrise, around 7:30–7:45 PM IST
  • Delhi NCR / Lucknow / Jaipur — typically 8:00–8:15 PM IST
  • Mumbai / Pune / Ahmedabad — 8:25–8:45 PM IST
  • Bengaluru / Hyderabad / Chennai — 8:30–8:50 PM IST
  • Amritsar / Chandigarh — 8:10–8:25 PM IST

When to use this

  • Planning Sargi timing the night before and the day's fast schedule
  • Confirming when to start the pooja — typically 1–2 hours before moonrise
  • Scheduling the family video call when relatives are in different cities

FAQ

Why does moonrise vary by city?

Moon rises at different times based on latitude / longitude. Eastern cities (Kolkata) see moonrise earlier; western (Mumbai, Ahmedabad) later. Difference can be up to 1.5 hours across India.

Cloudy night — what to do?

Traditionally, you can break fast at the calculated moonrise time even if not visually sighted. Some use moon visibility apps. Most pandits accept this in cloudy conditions.

Karva Chauth in southern India?

Predominantly North Indian. Increasingly observed by Punjabi / Marwari / North Indian families settled in the South. Local moonrise timing applies.
