How Udyam classification works
Since the 2020 rules (revised in 2024), the same investment-and-turnover ladder applies to manufacturing and services alike. Micro: investment ≤ ₹2.5 cr, turnover ≤ ₹10 cr. Small: ≤ ₹25 cr investment, ≤ ₹100 cr turnover. Medium: ≤ ₹125 cr investment, ≤ ₹500 cr turnover. The higher of the two parameters decides the category, and exports are excluded from the turnover count.
Worked example
A Pune-based auto-component manufacturer with ₹6 crore of plant & machinery and ₹45 crore turnover (₹40 cr domestic, ₹5 cr export) is classified as Small. Domestic turnover of ₹40 cr is below the small-enterprise cap of ₹100 cr, investment of ₹6 cr is well below ₹25 cr — so the Udyam certificate issues under Small Enterprise. That makes them eligible for the MSME 45-day payment rule (Section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act) and priority sector lending at lower interest rates.

FAQ
Is Udyam the same as the old MSME / Udyog Aadhaar?
No — Udyam (launched July 2020) replaced Udyog Aadhaar. All UAM registrations were valid until 31 Mar 2022; after that, you must re-register on udyamregistration.gov.in. The new system uses PAN and GST integration.
Does service-only business qualify under Udyam?
Yes — manufacturing AND services are both eligible. Earlier (pre-2020) classification was different for services; now it's unified investment + turnover criteria across both.
What benefits does Udyam unlock?
Priority sector lending (lower interest rates), 1-2% interest subvention on certain MUDRA loans, 50% rebate on patent / trademark filing fees, late-payment recovery via MSME Samadhan, and procurement preference (25% of govt purchases reserved for MSMEs).
