18-24 — workable but address weak kootas via puja / parihara.

How it works

Ashtakoota Milan compares the bride's and groom's Moon-sign (Janma Rashi) and Nakshatra across eight parameters: Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8) — total 36 points. Each koota signals a different compatibility axis: Varna for ego, Yoni for sexual chemistry, Gana for temperament, Bhakoot for family welfare, Nadi for genetic and progeny health. We sum your inputs and apply traditional thresholds.

Worked example

A North-Indian Brahmin couple from Varanasi gets Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 3, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 0 (Bhakoot dosha), Nadi 0 (Nadi dosha) — total 20. Above 18 it is generally accepted, but the two zero scores in Bhakoot and Nadi are red flags that typically prompt a parihara puja or specific remedial mantras before fixing the wedding date. South-Indian Iyengar and Iyer traditions often weight Nadi most heavily.

When to use this

  • Pre-engagement matchmaking when a pandit's detailed report is pending
  • Cross-checking horoscope-software scores from Jagannatha Hora or Parashara's Light
  • Family discussions before consulting a Jyotish for Manglik / Sade-Sati overlays

For broader date and Tithi planning, see our daily Panchang or numerology calculator.

FAQ

Total below 18 — does that mean no?

Traditionally yes — pandits suggest against. But many couples below 18 marry happily. Modern compatibility weighs more on values, communication, finances than astrological scores.

Manglik dosha separately?

Yes — Mangal dosha (Mars in 1/4/7/8/12) is a separate compatibility check. Both partners being Manglik is considered offset / cancelled.

Where to get the actual scores?

From a pandit, or astrology software (Drik, Mpanchang, etc.). They use birth time + place to compute exact koota points.
