How EPS family pension works

Under the EPS-1995 scheme, on the death of a member (in or after service) the spouse becomes entitled to a Widow / Widower Pension equal to 50% of the member's pension or ₹1,000/month minimum, whichever is higher — payable for life or until remarriage (which doesn't actually stop the pension, despite popular myth). Additionally, two children under age 25 each get 25% of the widow pension as a Child Pension, until they turn 25.

Worked example

A Mumbai-based EPF member earning pensionable salary ₹15,000 and 20 years of service dies in service at age 45. Notional pension = 15,000 × 20 / 70 = ₹4,286. Spouse pension = 50% × ₹4,286 = ₹2,143, but minimum ₹1,000 floor lifts it to no-change here (above floor). Two children aged 10 and 14 each get ₹2,143 × 25% = ₹536/month until they turn 25. So total monthly family payout = ₹2,143 + ₹536 + ₹536 = ₹3,215. After the elder child turns 25, the third child (if any, under 25) is added in his place.

When to use this

  • Estate planning — estimating spouse income after the EPF member's death
  • Filing Form 10D claim with EPFO after a death certificate is issued
  • Comparing with term insurance — family pension is usually insufficient on its own
  • Verifying the EPFO computed amount — mismatches are common when service is split across employers
