How notice period buyback works

If you want to leave before your full notice period, you can pay the company for the “short notice”. The default formula is basic salary × number of days short. Some companies use total gross salary; check your offer letter.

The new employer often pays this buyout as a sign-on bonus. Negotiate this before accepting the offer — leverage drops sharply once you've signed.

FAQ

Standard notice period in India?

Tech: 60-90 days (commonly 3 months). Banking: 90 days. Manufacturing: 30 days. Govt: 3 months for non-Group A. Senior roles: 6 months. Check your offer letter.

Can I buyout my notice?

Most companies allow it. Buyout = (notice days remaining) × (CTC ÷ 365). Some employers refuse buyout for client-facing or critical roles. Always negotiate.

New employer vs notice period — what to do?

Buyout if affordable. Or negotiate joining date. Or work both jobs (rarely — risky). Most reputable companies accept 30-60 days buyout for the new hire.
