How FASTag tolls are priced

NHAI plazas charge per the National Highways Fee Rules 2008 (revised April each year using the WPI index). Rates depend on vehicle class — Car/Jeep/Van pay 1×; LCVs ~1.6×; bus/truck (2-axle) ~3.45×; heavy 3-axle ~3.75×; multi-axle 7+ axles ~7.5×. Return trip within 24 hours gets a ~50% discount, and a monthly pass for the same plaza is roughly 50× the single-trip rate (≈ 60% off vs daily).

Worked example

A car from Delhi to Jaipur (NH-48, ~280 km) passes Manesar, Shahjahanpur, Daruhera, Behror and Thanagaji plazas — total one-way ≈ ₹450–500. Mumbai–Pune Expressway costs ₹336 one-way for a car (₹505 for return within 24 hours). Bangalore–Mysore Expressway (NE-275) is ₹165 one-way for a car. Driving without sufficient FASTag balance attracts a double-toll penalty — the plaza switches the lane to cash mode and bills 2×. A blacklisted tag (insufficient balance after the trip) blocks toll automation for future trips till recharged.

When to use this

  • Trip planning — budget tolls alongside fuel before a long drive
  • Salaried employees claiming travel reimbursement — toll receipts auto-mail from FASTag
  • Cab and aggregator operators (Ola Outstation, BlaBla) computing per-km customer pricing
  • Comparing monthly pass vs single-trip if you commute daily through the same plaza

FAQ

Can I drive without FASTag?

You'll pay 2× the toll at the cash lane. Since 2021, all NH plazas mandate FASTag. Even state highways are increasingly FASTag-only. Practically required.

Does FASTag work for non-NH toll booths?

Many state expressways (Mumbai-Pune, Yamuna, Eastern Peripheral, etc.) accept FASTag. Some private toll roads still use cash/cards. Check before the trip.

Why was double toll charged?

Common causes: low FASTag balance, blacklisted tag (KYC pending), tag reading failure due to placement. The booth has a CCTV log — file a dispute via the issuer bank app.
