Current STT rates (post Budget 2024)

STT is collected by the exchange and remitted to the government on the same day. Current rates: equity delivery 0.1% on both buy and sell; intraday equity 0.025% on the sell side only; futures (equity) 0.02% (up from 0.0125% after Budget 2024) on the sell side; options on equity 0.1% on premium on the sell side (raised from 0.0625%). Mutual fund redemptions on exchange are 0.001%. STT is fully chargeable and not refundable, even on loss-making trades.

Worked example

You buy 100 shares of HDFC Bank at ₹1,650 and sell at ₹1,720 same day (intraday). Buy turnover: ₹1,65,000 — STT 0 (delivery rate only on the sell side for intraday). Sell turnover: ₹1,72,000 — STT = ₹43. If instead you took delivery and sold next month, STT applies on both legs: ₹165 (buy) + ₹172 (sell) = ₹337 total. On a small ₹7,000 profit, that's a meaningful 4.8% drag — one reason positional traders favour futures, where STT is on notional value only on the sell side.

When to use this

  • Verifying the contract note STT line from Zerodha, Groww, Upstox
  • Cost-of-trading analysis before launching an algo or strategy
  • F&O option writers calculating the higher STT on premium income
  • Tax filing — STT paid is added to acquisition cost for LTCG computation

STT plus brokerage plus exchange charges plus 18% GST plus SEBI fees plus stamp duty make up your full trading cost — STT is often the largest. Read STT India explained for the rationale and how it interacts with LTCG/STCG, and use the capital gains calculator for the tax side.

FAQ

Why delivery STT charged on both sides now?

Pre-2024: only on sell. Budget 2024 clarified delivery STT applies on both buy AND sell.

Can STT be claimed back?

No — STT is non-refundable. Sell-side STT is included in sale consideration (slightly reduces gains).

F&O STT — premium or value?

Options: 0.0625% on PREMIUM (sell). Futures: 0.0125% on VALUE (sell). Big difference.
