How it works

DigiLocker is a MeitY initiative under Digital India that gives every Aadhaar holder a 1 GB digital locker linked to their Aadhaar number. We list the issuer organisations that have integrated with DigiLocker, the documents they release, and the URL or app flow to pull them. Documents stored in your DigiLocker are e-signed by the issuer — equivalent to the original under IT Act 2000 section 9-A and Rule 9A of the IT Rules.

Worked example

A Class 12 student in Karnataka can pull the CBSE marksheet, KEA application fee receipt and the JEE Main scorecard into DigiLocker minutes after results, then attach them to college applications via the DigiLocker share token — no PDF download or notarisation needed. RTO officers accept the DigiLocker copy of driving licence and vehicle RC for on-road verification under the Motor Vehicles Act amendment 2018; over 50,000 traffic stops per month now use this. Income Tax e-filing accepts DigiLocker Form 16 (TRACES issuer) and Form 26AS for ITR-1.

When to use this

• College admissions: CBSE, ICSE, state boards, CUET, JEE, NEET
• Showing DL and RC to a traffic constable instead of carrying originals
• Submitting Aadhaar/PAN to banks or NBFCs for KYC via Aadhaar e-sign
• EPFO members downloading UAN-linked passbook and PF withdrawal records
