Vastu for kitchen — why southeast is the ideal direction
Per Vastu Shastra, kitchen ideally goes in the southeast (Agni / fire deity rules SE). Cook facing east. Avoid northeast (water zone). Practical layouts for Indian homes.

Quick answer: Per Vastu Shastra, the southeast (SE) corner of your home is the ideal location for the kitchen because the fire deity (Agni) rules this direction. Cook facing east. Avoid placing the kitchen in the northeast (NE) — that's the most spiritual / water-element zone. Northwest (NW) is acceptable as second choice; southwest (SW) is to be avoided.
Why southeast for the kitchen
In traditional Vastu thinking, each direction has an element:
- East: Air (sun's entry point)
- Southeast: Fire (Agni)
- South: Earth (Yama)
- Southwest: Earth (stability)
- West: Air (Varuna)
- Northwest: Air (Vayu / movement)
- North: Water (Kubera / wealth)
- Northeast: Water (Ishana / spirituality)
Cooking involves fire and heat, which align naturally with the fire-element direction (SE). The kitchen in SE is said to bring positive energy to the household, ensure good health, and prevent food-related issues.

Where exactly the kitchen should be in SE
The kitchen as a whole should occupy the SE quadrant, but within it:
- Stove (cooking platform): in the SE corner of the kitchen, facing east while you cook
- Sink / wash area: in the NE corner of the kitchen (water source)
- Refrigerator: in the SW corner of the kitchen (heavy equipment)
- Storage cabinets: along the south wall
- Window: ideally on the east side for sunlight
- Microwave / oven / electrical appliances: in the SE area along with the stove
This separation is important: don't put the sink right next to the stove (water + fire = conflict in Vastu).
When SE is not possible
In flats and modern apartments, you may not be able to choose where the kitchen goes. In that case:
If kitchen is in NW: acceptable. Vayu (wind) helps fire spread; works as second choice. Stove still goes in the SE corner of the kitchen.
If kitchen is in NE: the worst placement per Vastu. Considered a major dosha (defect). Remedies:
- Use red curtains / blinds in the kitchen (red = fire)
- Place a small Hanuman idol or red statue
- Keep the cooking platform itself away from the NE corner
- Shift the gas stove to the SE part of the kitchen room
If kitchen is in SW: also a Vastu fault. Remedies similar to NE.
Cooking direction
Always face east while cooking if possible. If layout forces north, that's acceptable. Avoid facing south or west — considered to cause stress and digestive issues per traditional belief.
Practical Indian apartment kitchens
Modern Indian flats often have kitchens designed with utility-first thinking, not Vastu. Common compromises:
- L-shape kitchens along NE-east-SE walls. Still have stove in SE part.
- Galley kitchens running north-south. Stove on the east-side wall.
- Open kitchens in living-dining room. Place cooking unit per Vastu rules even if room layout is fixed.
Common kitchen Vastu mistakes
- Stove right next to sink. Water and fire mistake. Separate by at least 2-3 feet.
- Mirror in front of stove. Doubles the fire energy negatively. Avoid.
- Toilet sharing wall with stove. Bad — the negative energy from toilets affects food.
- Eating directly in the kitchen. OK if no choice, but separate dining is preferred.
- Dark-coloured kitchen. Pale yellows, light greens, off-white are recommended for kitchens; dark colours are discouraged.
What about kitchen colour?
Vastu-recommended colours: light yellow, off-white, soft green, light orange. Avoid dark blues, purples, blacks, deep reds.
The reasoning: warm light shades match the fire element while keeping the space welcoming. Dark colours absorb energy.
Modern view
Most Vastu prescriptions reflect practical wisdom encoded as religious principle:
- East-facing kitchen window → morning sunlight = better hygiene
- Kitchen in SE = away from main entrance + away from sleeping areas (smoke, smells)
- Stove not next to sink → fire safety + practical (water splash on flame)
- Eating in dining vs kitchen → cleaner environment
You don't have to believe in the religious dimension to benefit from the practical one.
FAQ
Q. Is Vastu necessary for kitchen design? A. Not legally or practically. Many beautifully-functioning Indian homes are anti-Vastu. It's a tradition; follow it if you / your family value it; ignore if you don't.
Q. Can I cook facing south in any case? A. Per strict Vastu, no. Practically, if forced by layout, no major issue. Some traditional homes use mirrors / colours to “reflect” the cooking direction back to east.
Q. What about the dining table direction? A. East-facing while eating is best (digestion + sun). West is OK. South is avoided.
Q. My kitchen is in NE — should I rebuild? A. Practical answer: rebuild only if doing major renovation anyway. Day-to-day fix: red colour accents, Hanuman idol, stove placement within the kitchen.
Q. Does kitchen direction affect the family's health? A. Per Vastu, yes — incorrect placement is said to cause digestive issues, conflict, financial loss. Per modern science, no measurable effect, but kitchen hygiene and ventilation (which Vastu indirectly addresses) do affect health.
