After tweeting, use cards-dev.twitter.com/validator to force X to re-fetch tags.
Which card type should you pick?
summary_large_image wins almost every time — the wide hero image stops the scroll, and engagement is typically 2–3× higher than the small thumbnail variant. The classic summary card is useful only when you genuinely don't have a strong image (e.g., a text-only podcast episode page) or when you want a more compact, link-list feel.
Generate the tags, then validate
Once the preview looks right, build the actual <meta name="twitter:*"> block with the Twitter Card tag generator. After publishing, run the URL through cards-dev.twitter.com/validator to force X to re-fetch metadata — X caches card data for around 7 days, so this step is essential before a campaign. Common pitfalls
- Image too small — summary_large_image needs at least 300×157 px (recommend 1200×675).
- Site handle missing — twitter:site and twitter:creator credit your account in the card.
- Hosting the image behind authentication — X must fetch it as an anonymous bot.
- Forgetting to validate after publishing — old cached card metadata can persist for a week.
FAQ
What is the difference between summary and summary_large_image?
summary shows a small square thumbnail next to the text. summary_large_image shows a wide hero image above the text - far higher click-through but requires an image at least 300x157 pixels (recommended 1200x675).
Does X / Twitter still need a Twitter handle in the card?
twitter:site and twitter:creator are optional but recommended. They credit your account in the card, drive followers, and unlock first-party analytics if your account is verified.
Why does the X card not render after I tweet the link?
X caches card metadata for around 7 days. Use the Card Validator (cards-dev.twitter.com/validator) to force a fresh fetch and check for missing tags before tweeting at scale.
