The image is 80% of the click
Facebook and LinkedIn both render Open Graph link cards image-first. A clean, on-brand 1200×630 image accounts for the vast majority of the share's click-through impact — title and description matter, but only after the image has stopped the scroll. Use a real photo or a designed graphic; avoid screenshots of dense text, which compress poorly in mobile feeds.
Generate, then debug
Once your preview looks right, generate the actual tags with the Open Graph tag generator and paste them into your <head>. After publishing, force a fresh cache scrape via the Facebook Sharing Debugger so WhatsApp and Messenger pick up the new image. For X / Twitter, layer in dedicated Twitter card tags. The deeper checklist is in our 2026 Open Graph checklist.
Common gotchas
- Image URL must be absolute (https://...), not a relative path.
- Image file size must be under 8 MB and ideally under 2 MB for fast feed rendering.
- og:url should equal your canonical URL — mismatches fragment social engagement counters.
- WhatsApp caches aggressively; expect 1–4 hour propagation after a re-scrape.
FAQ
What size should my Open Graph image be?
1200 x 630 pixels (1.91:1 ratio) is the modern Facebook / LinkedIn / WhatsApp standard. Minimum 600 x 315; below that, the platform falls back to a small square or no image at all. Keep file size under 8 MB.
Why does my OG image not show on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp caches link previews aggressively and only refreshes via the Facebook Sharing Debugger (developers.facebook.com/tools/debug). Push a fresh re-scrape there and WhatsApp picks it up within a few hours.
Do I need separate Open Graph and Twitter tags?
X (Twitter) reads Open Graph as a fallback if twitter star tags are missing, but having explicit twitter:card, twitter:image and twitter:title gives you control over the X-specific summary_large_image layout.
