How to mask your Aadhaar number in PDF safely (free, browser-only)
UIDAI recommends sharing a masked Aadhaar (last 4 digits visible) for non-mandatory verification. Here's how to mask Aadhaar in PDF documents without uploading to any server.

Quick answer: UIDAI itself recommends sharing a masked Aadhaar (only the last 4 digits visible, first 8 redacted) anywhere it's not legally mandatory. The full 12-digit number combined with your photograph can be used to fraudulently open SIM cards, bank accounts, and even loans. Use the Aadhaar Masker to redact your number in any PDF without uploading the document anywhere.
If you've been sharing your full Aadhaar with landlords, hostels, hotels, courier services, or schools, you're exposing yourself to identity fraud risk. The fix is simple: send a masked copy.
What is a masked Aadhaar
A masked Aadhaar shows only the last 4 digits of your 12-digit number. The first 8 are replaced with X or black-out marks. UIDAI offers an official masked Aadhaar PDF download from the myAadhaar portal, but if you already have a regular Aadhaar PDF (or it's embedded in another document like a rent agreement), you need to mask it yourself.
Why masking matters
Identity-fraud cases involving Aadhaar have risen sharply since e-KYC became universal. With the full Aadhaar number plus your photograph, a bad actor can:
- Open prepaid SIM cards in your name (used for fraud calls and SMS scams)
- Open zero-balance bank accounts that get used to launder money
- Apply for instant personal loans of ₹50k–2 L; the borrower vanishes, you get the recovery calls
- Register fake businesses with you as a director
- Open a demat account and run pump-and-dump schemes
The damage takes 6-18 months to clean up — police complaints, FIRs, blocked credit reports.
Where masking is appropriate
Use a masked Aadhaar for hostel / hotel check-in, courier delivery, e-commerce returns, school / coaching admission, landlord ID proof, job interviews — anywhere the receiver isn't a govt body or a licensed financial institution.
Where you must use the full Aadhaar
Banks (account opening, FD, MF e-KYC), EPFO, Income Tax department (PAN-Aadhaar linking, ITR filing), govt benefit schemes (PM Kisan, Ayushman Bharat, ration card), and telecom re-KYC.
How the Aadhaar Masker tool works
- Upload your PDF to the Aadhaar Masker — runs entirely in your browser
- The tool extracts the text layer and finds 12-digit number patterns
- Each candidate is validated with the Verhoeff checksum (Aadhaar's built-in algorithm) so a random invoice number doesn't get flagged
- You see all detected numbers; uncheck any false positives
- Click "Mask & download" — the first 8 digits get black rectangles overlaid
- Result is a new PDF with the masking baked in (not just visual)
Why client-side processing matters
Aadhaar PDFs typically contain your photo, address, DOB and other PII. Uploading to a server is exactly what you're trying to avoid. The Aadhaar Masker uses PDF.js + pdf-lib running fully in your browser — no upload, no server-side storage.
FAQ
Q. Is masking my Aadhaar legal? A. Yes — UIDAI itself encourages it. Section 7 of the Aadhaar Act only requires the full Aadhaar in specific contexts (govt benefits, banking KYC). Everywhere else, masked Aadhaar is sufficient.
Q. Can the recipient un-mask the Aadhaar from a masked PDF? A. If the masking is done correctly (rectangles drawn on top of the text layer), no. The tool draws solid black rectangles that cover both the visual rendering and prevent text-copy from extracting the digits.
Q. Should I share masked Aadhaar with my landlord? A. Yes — that's the recommended best practice. Provide masked Aadhaar plus your phone number plus an employer letter.
Q. Will Indian Railways or OYO accept masked Aadhaar? A. Yes for both. Most travel and hospitality bookings now explicitly accept masked Aadhaar.
Q. Can I mask an Aadhaar in a JPG / image instead of PDF? A. Use any image editor to draw black rectangles over the first 8 digits. The Aadhaar Masker tool currently handles only PDFs.
